The key to designing a good keyboard is planning and consideration for the style of operation. This section will provide some pointers on what to think about before the actual programming begins. Sometimes it can be useful to map things out on paper first to get a an idea of how much needs to go onto the keyboard and how it can be laid out to be easily and quickly utilised by staff at the POS Terminal.

Remember, if the keyboard is confusing to look at and items are hard to find, staff will become frustrated and service will be slow for the customer.

Tips for keyboard design

Allow input from operations staff
Put most popular selling stock in priority positions
Allocate rows, columns or levels for similar items
Think about colour themes
Use Offset keys to save space - Carton, 12 pk, 6 pack, Single or Jug, Pint, Middy, Schooner etc
Use Group Search keys to maximum benefit
Standardise function or table keys across all pages for consistency
Miscellaneous keys and Management Functionality/Security Requirements - Cash Out, Price Level Change, Account Payment, Training Mode etc
Utilising the "Manager Page" for Exceed and Key Security for Versaterms
Is a floor plan required for Exceed?
Will User security be in place - Proximity Readers or Clerk Key functions
What is the style of service in the venue - Bistro Style (order and pay at the counter), Restaurant (Table service), Takeaway?
How many different keyboards are required in the venue?
